title. urTEMPO

date. 2019

description. urTEMPO is a project that explores the tempo and rhythm of a musical track and how it can relate to the circumstance or moment we listen. The range of the tempo of music falls in the range of our resting and active heartbeat. I explore if and how the tempo of a musical track could connect to our heart rate.

Spotify is an accessible music platform and app. As of June 2018, Spotify had 83 million paying subscribers worldwide. urTEMPO works with a pulse sensor, arduino and Spotify API to create a sensed method to play songs for user’s life moments.

Throughout this project I used the measure of the users heart tempo to find the best tempo of song to play for the moment that the user is in. This then allows the user to pick from some of their favourite songs without needing to think about it. This will allow for a user to play music with their heart.

This project could potentially be a creative tool for event designers, organisers and musicians. Expanding the idea to measure and alter a greater variety of audio features could even allow for our hearts to be the DJs.
